How can a knit drape like a tailored woven? Inside the vertical loop matrix

Standard knits sag because their horizontal loops elongate permanently under gravity. A linear parallel-loop construction feeds hundreds of warp yarns vertically under constant tension, creating a rigid vertical axis that drapes like a woven while stretching 30% in four directions.

Why gym-wear knits sag and cling

Weft knitting — the construction behind standard jersey and gym wear — loops a single continuous yarn horizontally. Those interlocking loops float loosely over one another, which is why the fabric stretches easily but has no vertical tension.

Under gravity and repeated wear, the loops elongate permanently. That is the “pocketing” at elbows and knees, the sagging, and the extreme drape that makes athletic fabrics cling to the body.

The linear parallel-loop alternative

Faraja’s fabric uses a linear parallel-loop construction: hundreds of individual warp yarns fed vertically and simultaneously, zigzagged around adjacent needles into interlocking parallel columns (wales) tied by diagonal courses.

Because the vertical yarns are under constant tension during construction, the fabric carries a rigid vertical axis — structurally equivalent to the warp threads in a traditional woven reed. That high modulus of elasticity along the vertical axis is what resists gravitational pull and holds a crisp shoulder line, placket and collar drape.

Stretch without consequence

Elastane fibres embedded within the vertical yarn columns supply up to 30% four-way elongation under body movement — and return the fabric to 100% of its original dimension on release. Elastic recovery measures 95–98% after 20% elongation testing under ISO 20932-1, against less than 3% for standard woven cotton or polyester.

The knit geometry also protects the garment itself: loop deformation absorbs movement instead of transferring it to the seams, cutting seam tension by up to 40% during deep flexion — sitting, bending, kneeling in prayer — and preventing the puckering that ages traditional thobes.
